Doha, Qatar, Feb. 17, 2009: Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) and Qatar Science & Technology Park announced today that they will establish the Center for Sustainable Energy Efficiency to focus on technologies in lighting, cooling and solar adapted to work well in the Middle East's climate. Chevron is investing $20 million over five years to fund the partnership.
The Center for Sustainable Energy Efficiency, expected to open in late 2009, will also research the development and application of renewable energy generation, and will collaborate with the many universities in Qatar, other QSTP tenants and local developers to develop and train young Qatari engineers, scientists and students.
"I am very please to welcome Chevron's Center for Sustainable Energy Efficiency to be located at QSTP to Qatar," said His Excellency the Deputy Premier & Minister of Energy and Industry, Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah. "Establishment of this center here in Qatar greatly enhances our ability to take advantage of Chevron's expertise and leadership in the area of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies in the future and for training Qatari engineers and scientists".
Said Chevron Vice Chairman Peter Robertson: "Chevron believes that energy efficiency and conservation are the most immediate and cost-effective sources of new energy, and we are proud to work in partnership with Qatar to help achieve environmental management and economic diversification - two important elements of Qatar's National Vision."
"By bringing Chevron's global expertise in energy efficiency and renewable power to this premier center for research, learning and entrepreneurship, we will identify specific energy technologies that work well in the region's desert climate and to develop capabilities within the country that will ultimately benefit Qatar and the entire region.," Robertson said.
Carl Atallah, Qatar country manager for Chevron, added: "The Center for Sustainable Energy Effeciency demonstrates Chevron's strong commitment to investing in Qatar and working side-by-side with its people to build the country's future as a knowledge-based economy.
The centre will be located at QSTP. As part of Qatar Foundation, the science park fosters research, innovation and entrepreneurship. It does this by attracting companies from around the world to develop and commercialise their technology to help build Qatar's emerging knowledge economy.
Dr. Tidu Maini, executive chairman of QSTP, added: "Finding smarter ways of using energy is no less important in Qatar than in the rest of the world. By taking a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to energy research, Chevron's QSTP centre will help position Qatar at the forefront of environmental technologies globally."
Chevron began focusing on energy efficiency as part of its long-term strategy in 1992, when it began tracking energy use across its worldwide operations. Since then, the company has improved its internal energy efficiency by 28 percent while doubling in size.
The Center for Sustainable Energy Effeciency is the first ever Chevron Energy Solutions (CES) project outside of the U.S. CES has developed hundreds of projects involving energy efficiency or renewable power for education, government and business customers throughout the U.S. It markets both energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies such as high-effeciency lighting, cooling, fuel cells, biomass, wind and solar.
