Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q)
Committed to excellence in education, research and patient care
Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q) is educating young people in the region to be physicians, biomedical researchers and medical educators at the forefront of their chosen fields.
Established under the terms of a 2001 agreement between Cornell University and Qatar Foundation, WCMC-Q is part of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, one of the top-ranked clinical and medical research centers in the U.S.
The Medical College is situated at the heart of Education City. The superb facilities, provided by Qatar Foundation, include an infrastructure of advanced technology that allows students and faculty to share learning experiences with colleagues in the U.S.
WCMC-Q offers a unique, six-year integrated program of pre-medical and medical studies leading to the Cornell University M.D. degree. Teaching is by Cornell and Weill Cornell faculty.
During the two-year pre-medical phase, students follow Cornell University courses in the sciences basic to medicine and psychology, with additional seminars in writing and medical ethics.
This is followed by the four-year Medical Program, which replicates the curriculum of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. With an emphasis on developing skills of analysis and critical thinking through problem-based learning, the program also offers the young doctors-in-training experience of patient care from the first year, through a partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC).
It should be noted that there is a separate admissions process for each program.
True to Cornell tradition, selected students take part in research in the laboratories of Cornell University and Weill Cornell Medical College in the U.S. during the summer vacation. Others participate in investigations sponsored by Qatar National Research Fund's Undergraduate Research Experience Program.
Looking ahead, once Qatar Foundation's Sidra Medical and Research Center opens in 2011, it will form, together with WCMC-Q, an academic medical center of the highest quality. Graduates of the Medical College may look forward to a future as physicians, researchers and educators in a groundbreaking center on the Education City campus in Doha.
